Overview
The Cantigas de amigo are a lyric genre of refined poetry whose subjects turn on the laments of a woman weeping for the absence of her loved one. Something more than 2,000 examples are now known of these cantigas, of which just 6, all from the pen of Martín Códax and discovered in 1914 by Pedro Vindel – a bibliophile who found them copied in the binding of parchment of a De Officiis by Cicerón – conserve the music. This most beautiful poetry and music comes from the Spanish group Supramusic, in readings of great formal refinement, but also of scientific and philological rigour which make this disc an undisputed mediaeval Spanish musical reference.
