La Mutine

Pieces for therbo

Rodrigo Jarabo, tiorba

Categories: Early
Period: Baroque

Overview

The seventeenth century saw extraordinary development of plucked string instruments, amongst which the Italian chitarrone and the French theorbo enjoyed the esteem and predilection of the most elaborate and refined Baroque courts, a taste which very quickly, and thanks to the efforts of publishers, surpassed those borders, extending into other social sectors of less political relevance but of increasing cultural and economic influence, such as traders, jurists or ecclesiastics with university training.

The programme offered on this disc by Rodrigo Jarabo, the brilliant theorbist from Valladolid, evokes precisely the musical setting in which both those instruments reached their maximum artistic heights in the hands of maestros of the standing of Castaldi, Kapsperger or Visée. A wonderful repertoire filled with refined nuances and emotional, chromatic and stylistic contrasts ranging from the lyricism of the canzone or gagliardas written in the 1620s by Piccinini, to the majesty and elegant nobility of the Piezas en Futfa by Robert de Visée, the great French guitarist who spent more than three decades in the courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV.
